When God Feels Far Away:
A Crisis of Faith at a Glance

By Shakira O'Garro, LMHC-D, LPC, LPCC, NCC

A crisis of faith is a period in which the beliefs, practices, or relationship with God that once anchored your life become sources of doubt, confusion, or pain rather than comfort. It is not just asking hard theological questions. It is a deeper destabilization of the inner spiritual life — and it is far more common than most churches make room to acknowledge.

Doubt is not the opposite of faith. Scripture is full of people — David, Job, Thomas, Abraham — who wrestled honestly with God and were not disqualified for it.

1
Feeling spiritually numb or empty during prayer and worship
2
Anger at God — and shame about feeling it
3
Avoiding church, Scripture, or your faith community
4
Suffering has made God's goodness feel impossible to believe
5
Lost sense of purpose, calling, or spiritual identity
6
Questioning beliefs you once held with absolute certainty
7
Feeling profoundly alone even among fellow believers
8
Spiritual or religious harm is surfacing and needs tending

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?"

Psalm 22:1 — Even David went there. You are not alone.

Evidence-Based

EMDR

Processes spiritual wounds stored in the body — dread of prayer, shutdown in worship spaces, intrusive memories of religious harm.

Values-Based

ACT

Helps you live with integrity and meaning even while the larger theological questions remain open. Deconstruction doesn't have to mean paralysis.

Relational

Grief Work

Anger at God is a grief emotion. Therapy creates space to feel it fully — without rushing to resolution — so it can actually move.

✦ ✦ ✦
Treats spirituality as a core dimension of mental health — not a side note
Familiar with religious trauma as a clinical category
Trained in trauma-informed modalities (EMDR, ACT, PE)
Holds your faith with curiosity and respect — not skepticism
Culturally responsive — understands your whole context
Doesn't pathologize belief or rush you toward resolution

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you."

Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
